The Waterways Trust - Last AGM Before Joining The CART

Annual meeting reveals how The Waterways Trust is enriching people’s lives through waterways

2010/11 has been a busy period for The Waterways Trust. At its annual meeting on 17 November 2011, the last before it joins with the Canal & River Trust next year, it highlighted the diverse projects underway that are helping to enrich people’s lives.

From the Highlands to Ellesmere Port, Burnley to Stroud, the Trust is using waterways to build communities, help people develop new skills and interests and improve their quality of life. Project workers from Glasgow, Birmingham, Burnley and the National Waterways Museum showcased their work at the annual meeting. They described how, by working with project partners, communities across Britain are discovering their canals, taking ownership and starting to value the waterway environment and heritage.

An education project at the National Waterways Museum that uses locks to help children develop and understanding of technology and maths, a walking group in a deprived area of Birmingham is helping ladies from different ethnic groups improve their health and lifestyle and an innovative ‘canal-handling’ kit at the Museum of Glasgow are just a few of the projects that are helping to bring waterways to life for people of all ages.

Over the past year, the Trust has raised over £1.25 million and a further £1 million in new pledges for projects based along our canals and rivers. Since the Trust started working in 1999, it has raised over £15 million. The Trust has also delivered a range of projects across the UK, working with 450 volunteers. Over the past two years, over 1,000 young people have taken part in its flagship projects, Waterways Action Squad in north-west England and Green Action in Scotland.

The Trust’s annual Review of Key Activities (2010/11), published today (18 November 2011), further explores the work being undertaken by the charity and its partners. The digital document, available on-line at www.TheWaterwaysTrust.org.uk, uses new technology so it can be easily viewed on smartphones and android devices as well as the standard pc. A full copy of the Report & Accounts for 2010/11 is also available on-line.
