The Waterways Trust Scotland, British Waterways Scotland, Re-Union and Wester Hailes Health Agency Will Work With Volunteers To Create Community Garden

Canal Community Garden Benefits From Grant

Plans to create a community garden alongside the Union Canal at Calder Crescent, Wester Hailes, Edinburgh can now get underway thanks to funding from Scottish Natural Heritage.

The Waterways Trust Scotland, British Waterways Scotland, Re-Union and Wester Hailes Health Agency will work with volunteers from the local community to create the garden which will improve an entrance way to the canal and encourage more people to visit the waterway.

The new garden, which will adjoin a community orchard, will give volunteers the opportunity to learn a range of conservation, gardening and path maintenance skills. In addition to the garden work, volunteers will help clean up the canal and towpath to help ensure it is an attractive and inviting place for local residents to visit.

Karen Moore, Development Director The Waterways Trust Scotland explains: “As well as creating an inspiring place for the local community, the aim of the project is to use environmental activities to bring about positive changes beyond the physical improvements. It will provide opportunities for volunteers to learn about the heritage and wildlife of the canal, develop new skills and therefore increase employment prospects and foster a culture of caring for the natural environment.”

John O’Keefe Scottish Natural Heritage Area Officer said: “We are delighted to be able to support this project with funding as it helps local volunteers look after their own greenspace.  Volunteering is a great way to get out and make the most of your local nature sites. This community garden project will benefit both people and wildlife.”
