Stoke-on-Trent Boat Club
BOAT CLUB GOES BACK TO SCHOOL - FOR ITS BIRTHDAY
Stoke on Trent Boat Club is fifty this year, and has enlisted the help of St Lukes Primary School in Endon, where the club is based. The school held a Canal Week, beginning with a slide show by club member John Eaves. ‘What a brilliant way to learn about canals and narrow boats’ was the comment of George [year 4]. Connie Birchall, introduced the children to painting canalware and the youngsters had great fun with hands-on painting. Katie [year 1] said that ‘Connie taught me to paint roses and castles’.
Another member, Erica Martin, dressed in boatwomen’s costume, told the pupils what the old boaters - including children - used to wear. She had clothes the boys and girls enjoyed trying on - bowler hats, boatwomen’s bonnets and waistcoats. Grace [year 1] said ‘we loved the lady in costume’ and Aaron [year 3] agreed - ‘it was great to dress up in the outfits’.
Dave Walker, of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, showed the children how to make rope, and splice and tie knots. Another popular hands-on activity.
Pupils visited the Boat Club, with a chance to look inside a boat. The children were amazed. They learned that boats have a galley not a kitchen, they saw beds and toilets, even Rosie and Jim! Some boys and girls were drawing, others looked at the club’s memorabilia from 50 years. One teacher commented that this had been ‘one of the most stimulating weeks of the term’.
The children are now preparing entries for competitions run by the boat club - art, photography, story and poetry writing. Entries will be displayed at the boat club over the weekend of 26-27 May, at the club’s open days and rally of boats. The four winners and runners-up will receive prizes including a boat trip, kindly offered by the Beatrice Charity.
This Golden Jubilee Rally is the main event to mark the Golden Jubilee - attractions include historic narrowboats, music and entertainment, model boats, birds of prey, lots of children’s activities - even a teddy bears’ picnic. All welcome - admission is free. Further details from 07817 328385.
Erica Martin, who conceived the idea of working with St Lukes, was most impressed with the pupils, in school and at the boat club. ‘They were keen and interested, and very well behaved indeed,’ she said. St Lukes head, David Law, was most enthusiastic - at the end of the week, his comment was: ’Absolutely fantastic, the children were enthralled’.
