Far left is Wyn Evans the BW supervisor of the Montgomery Canal. On the afternoon of Monday, 10th September, as a consequence of the award of “Welsh Project of the Year” in July 2007, members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, with their Director Cathy McLean, paid a visit to Newhouse Lock, near Aberbechan and Abermule, Powys, on the Montgomery Canal to see the restoration work which had earned the award.

They were met by representatives of British Waterways and the Shropshire Union Canal Society and given an informal talk on the restoration work by the engineers of the two organisations, Neil Rice from BW and Mike Friend from the Society.

The visitors were very impressed by the work, especially when they heard that it was completed on time and under budget. They were also pleased to hear that financial assistance had been given to the work by the Heritage Lottery Fund, amongst others, and were very supportive of the Society’s efforts to get the whole canal open again to boat traffic.

Newhouse Lock lies between New House Lock Bridge (No. 149) and New House Bridge (No. 150) near Aberbechan at OS Grid: SO 152944 - MAP
