Shropshire Union Canal Society
- Lockwind 2/2007

Over the August Bank Holiday weekend the Shropshire Union Canal Society held the second of their 2007 Lockwinds at Cholmondeston Lock on the Middlewich Canal

In contrast to the May Bank Holiday the weather was very kind to them and over the four days that volunteers operated the lock almost £2800 was raised for the Society’s funds to be used on projects to enhance the Shropshire Union Canal and for restoration work on the Montgomery Canal.

Some interesting statistics emerged during the weekend, on Sunday a record number of boats were worked through the lock by the volunteers, 81 boats passed between 7.30 and 18.00. In addition a further 14 boats went through the lock after the volunteers left at 18.00 among a total of 95 boats in one day. Volunteers have to sign on and off as part of the Health & Safety procedure when helping at the Lockwind and it has been calculated from the time sheets that £3.20 per hour was the value of each volunteer’s labour to make up the grand total of just under £2800.

As usual the Society were grateful for the contributions of goods and produce to be offered for sale by the lockside, a variety that included a beer pump, life belts, fresh fruit, cakes and the ever notorious marmalade. They were also pleased with the co-operation given by British Waterways and the encouraging visits to the event by several members of their staff.
