Selby Canal Fest (2007) - Selby Canal - Selby, North Yorkshire
Selby District Council in partnership with Selby Boat Centre and the Selby District Surewaters Project will be hosting the first ever Selby Canal Festival...
Selby Canal Festival 2007
The first ever Selby Canal Festival will see a whole range of activities taking place over the weekend 15th and 16th of September 2007 in Selby town centre, North Yorkshire. The weekend festival, celebrating the history of Selby’s Canals and Waterways, will include numerous events taking place at Selby Boat Centre on Bawtry Road in Selby, who will be hosting a boat jumble along with lots of food and plenty of drink! Selby & District Surewater’s will provide free canal trips to families, giving people the unique opportunity to experience a canal trip, whilst enjoying some of the unique wildlife surrounding the Selby Waterways.
Fun family activities will take place at the Abbey Leisure Centre in Selby including an ‘It’s a knockout’ competition followed by a fun family disco.
The weekend will also focus on the importance of water safety in and around the waterways, with the Abbey Leisure Centre providing lifesaving displays in the centre pool. This will focus on teaching members of the public the importance of water safety and also rescue and lifesaving techniques, whilst local fire fighters will also provide an exciting canal based rescue demonstration to members of the public.
A traditional brass band performance will bring a close to the events, taking place in Selby’s Victorian Park in the shadow of the famous Selby Abbey. It is hoped the event will lead to an annual festival, which both the people of Selby and visitors to the area can enjoy.
