The Lion Salt Works, Northwich, Cheshire on the Trent and Mersey Canal
We visited the (Red) Lion Salt Works in July 2007, a working open pan brine salt works, the last of its kind, was forced to close in 1986, with the loss of foreign markets. The site right next to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Marston, Cheshire, on the B5075. The site is designated an area of National and European Union historic importance.
The Lion Saltworks Trust has recently been conditionally awarded a substantial renovation grant by the National Lottery Commission to bring the old Lion Salt Works back to a visitor attraction standard worthy of its heritage status.
The current, small but interesting, free entry museum will be extended and other buildings and equipment on the site brought back into use.
Besides Roman and medieval salt pans, found at Bostock in Cheshire, many other salt related artifacts are on display at the Lion Salt Works Museum.
The old iron salt pans are not accessible to the general public at the moment but we still think the site is worth a visit.
