SUMBA WORK PARTY - December Update

Work Party - Saturday December 10th 2016

Sixteen volunteers helped with the final maintenance work party of 2016 and were split into two teams. One team left Aqueduct Marina in our volunteer workboat "Malvern" to start cutting back the overhanging offside vegetation between Prescott Bridge 10 and Hoolgrave Bridge 11. Working on the offside is always difficult as it involves keeping the boat steady whilst the lopping is completed. Another visit in January will complete the work between these two bridges.

A second team left Cholmondeston Lock in workboat "Gowy" to complete the cutting back of overhanging towpath vegetation at the Sykes Hollow 48hr moorings. A particularly nasty job involving the removal of blackthorn and other "glove piercing" growth obstructing the towpath and the leisure area. Nevertheless we managed to make a significant visual difference to the area.

Halfway through this year's Autumn/Winter programme and we have already completed cutting back 5 1/2 miles of overhanging towpath vegetation between Barbridge Junction and Bridge 15. On the offside, with three months still remaining, a large proportion of the overhanging branches and bushes have been removed.

2016/17 Autumn/Winter Hedge Laying Project

Not resting on their laurels with second place in the 2016 Living Waterways Awards with last year's hedge, our "tree huggers" are currently laying the hedge at the 48hr moorings above Cholmondeston Lock.

Since the beginning of October, with two work parties a month, they have already laid about 70m of hedge and prepared nearly 15m ready for the next session on January 9th. This year, with the permission of the landowner, all the waste wood and ivy etc. is being burned in the adjacent field. The bonfire has led to the invention of the "Great SUMBA Bake Off" - lunchtime baked potatoes are being produced in great numbers!!

SUMBA @ Venetian Marina Cafe

There's now a SUMBA themed table in Venetian Marina's Cafe below Cholmondeston Lock - it's by the fire with a map of the Middlewich Branch Canal. Besides showing our adopted 5 1/2 miles from Barbridge Junction to Bridge 15 at Church Minshull, there are links to our website, Facebook group and email address.

Call in and enjoy some very reasonably priced snacks, breakfasts and meals - or just scrumptious cake and tray bakes. Venetian Marina Cafe's Facebook page - http://tinyurl.com/j9389up
