Report on last work party, and plans for June

SUMBA work

WORK PARTY - SATURDAY MAY 14

In glorious sunshine fourteen volunteers helped complete our 78th work party at two locations. With lots of boats around there was plenty of interaction with passing boaters - who as usual were very complimentary about the visual and maintenance standards along the canal.

Brickyard Bridge No 6 Our second visit in successive months to replace the bridge's rotten timbers - a further eight sections completed the job. The bridge will be repainted in July - then watch out for the white glare!! The grit in the steps was topped up again and sections of broken cement repaired.

Minshull Lock Our annual repaint was completed - the hot weather was an advantage as it allowed us to apply 2 or 3 coats of paint. The lock beams, paddle gear, lock side infrastructure and mooring bollards etc. all now look shiny new.

A gritted surface was installed under the top lock beam to eliminate a trip hazard - a large area of uneven broken cement on the offside was repaired - and there was time to patch some broken wash wall below the lock. Great job done!!

NEXT WORK PARTY No. 79

Date - Saturday June 11
Project - Repainting and maintenance at Wardle and Stanthorne Locks in Middlewich
Meet At - Wardle Lock - accessed from A533 Sandbach road
Parking - Nearby to lock
Time - 9:30am to mid afternoon

These locks are both outside of our adoption area, but they need some essential TLC in advance of the Middlewich Folk & Boat Festival the following weekend June 18th & 19th. Stanthorne will be especially challenging - but very rewarding when completed. Our work party will ensure that ALL the Middlewich Branch Canal is looking good for the high numbers of visiting boat traffic.

Some of the team will remain onsite at Wardle and the remainder will travel to Stanthorne Lock in CRT's workboat Gowy.
