Chesterfield Canal Trust E-Newsletter Number 90
Welcome to our ninetieth electronic newsletter..
Tapton Lock Consultation
Tapton Lock Visitor Centre is under threat of closure. It is run by the DCC Countryside Service and plays a massive part in attracting visitors to the canal, not least in hosting our John Varley tripboat. Were it to shut, it would be a huge blow to our project.
Derbyshire County Council is carrying out a consultation exercise. Click here to take part.
The final date for submissions is 6th May. Please give your support and please tell others so they can add their support.
Supporters Group Meeting
There will be a Supporters' Group meeting at Staveley Town Basin, S43 3XZ, to see the works on the new lock and Hartington Harbour, at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday 10th May. Afterwards we will repair to the All Inn on Lowgates in Staveley, S43 3TX. You are very strongly advised to bring wellies.
We will need lots of volunteers to run our Festival at Staveley Town Basin on 28th and 29th May. If you would like to help, please reply to this email. If there is something you are particularly keen to help with, please say so. This could be Car parking, Stewarding, Gates, Sales, Looking after the trailboaters, helping to set up on 26th and/or 27th, helping to pack up on 30th etc.
On Monday 30th May there will be a flotilla of trailboats and our tripboats from the basin to Tapton and back. We need teams of people to operate the locks – at least three per lock. If you would like to help with this, please reply to this email. We will provide windlasses.
If you would like to take the trip on one of our tripboats, it costs £15 return or £10 one way. Members can go for £5. Ring 07925 851569 to book.
Illuminated parade volunteers
On Saturday 28th May, starting at 9.30 p.m., the parade of illuminated boats will be running between the basin and Gas Works Winding Hole just past Mill Green. We will need stewards to keep an eye on things. If you would like to help with this, please reply to this email.
