Chesterfield Canal Trust E-Newsletter Number 89

Chesterfield Logo

Dear Supporter,

Welcome to our eighty ninth electronic newsletter.

Once again we are appealing for your help – this time to save Tapton Lock Visitor Centre. You have always responded magnificently in the past to such appeals; we would be very grateful if you could do so again now.

Tapton Lock Survey
Tapton Lock Visitor Centre is under threat of closure. It is run by the DCC Countryside Service and plays a massive part in attracting visitors to the canal, not least in hosting our John Varley tripboat. Were it to shut, it would be a huge blow to our project.
Derbyshire County Council is carrying out a consultation exercise until 6th May. Click here to give your opinion online, or see the attached.
Please give your support and please tell others so they can add their support.

Hollingwood Hub Concert
We still have some tickets for the Devil’s Violin on April 13th at 7.30 p.m. Click here to buy online or ring 01246 477569.

Festival
As you probably know, we are hosting the IWA National Trailboat Festival at Staveley Town Basin on 28th and 29th May. We will need at least 100 volunteers for it to run smoothly.
If you would like to help, please reply to this email. If there is something you are particularly keen to help with, please say so. This could be Car parking, Stewarding, Gates, Looking after the trailboaters, helping to set up on 26th and/or 27th, helping to pack up on 30th....
We will also need people to put up posters in local shops, notice boards etc. If you would like to do this where you live, please reply to this email with your postal address.

Promotions Team
Our Promotions Team will be at the following venues in the next few weeks.
Barrow Hill Village 9th April
Retford Charter Day 2nd May
Derbyshire Food & Drink Fair 14th & 15th May
If you would like to help, please come and try it for an hour or two. For further information email [email protected] .

History Exhibition
As part of Barrow Hill Village Open Day, we will be holding a history exhibition at Hollingwood Hub on Saturday April 9th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Click here for further details.

Tripboats
Madeline (Saturdays from Hollingwood Hub), John Varley (Sundays from Tapton Lock) and Hugh Henshall (Sundays from the Lock Keeper) will be doing walk up trips every week.
Over the school holidays, either Madeline or John Varley will be doing trips virtually every day.
John Varley is starting its Lock Keeper’s Table Cruises on 4th April. These will run every Monday evening until the end of September. See attached.
On Wednesday 13th and Saturday 30th April, John Varley will be doing a 6-hour Cruise from Tapton Lock, up to St Helena’s, then all the way down to Staveley Town Basin and back again. It will stop both ways at Hollingwood Hub. £21 or £16 for under 16s or over 65s. For bookings, ring 01629 533020. It will do the same trip, but with lunch provided at Hollingwood Hub, for St George’s Day on April 23rd. See attached.
Hugh Henshall will be running Cake and Cruise trips from Shireoaks on 30th April.
Seth Ellis will be running cruises from Retford Town Lock on 2nd May.

Photos needed
We are still appealing for your best photos of the canal. We need them for our 2017 Calendar, for our Christmas cards and for some blank cards that we are producing. If you have any photos that you would like to be considered, please reply to this email with the images attached.

Chesterfield Area Walking Festival
This ever popular festival is returning for its tenth year. Click here for the website.
The canal walks guided by the Trust are numbers 13, 17, 26 and 31. The latter two are Boots and Boats that include a trip on Madeline. Walks numbers 5, 36, 40 and 50 also go along parts of the canal.

Pop Up Party
One of our members found a competition online for a pop up party for up to 50 with everything provided by Pork Farms, so she nominated Chesterfield Canal Trust volunteers. If you click here you will see that you can like and share on Facebook and retweet on Twitter. The more we get the more chance we have of winning a well deserved party for our hardworking volunteers. Please pass this on to anyone who you think would help us by liking and sharing on Facebook or retweeting on Twitter.

Keep smiling!

Rod Auton.
