The Boat Café Celebrates its first birthday

BoatCafe The Boat Cafe celebrates its first birthday at Easter. It is a floating café in a specially converted canal narrow boat permanently moored on the K&A canal at Meadows Bridge between Bradford and Avoncliff www.theboatcafe.co.uk

Manager Matt Windsor says “When we opened in 2014 we had no idea whether we would (literally) sink or swim but everything has turned out very well. Things really took off during the summer and we stayed open right through the winter and people seemed to appreciate our hot stove on cold, wet days. We even opened on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and were packed out. Since we fitted our toilet Tuesday mornings have become a popular meeting place for mums and babies.”

The boat is 70 feet long but only 7 feet wide. It seats 18 people inside and 8 more outside on the bank. Matt Windsor said “People are really intrigued to sit inside an old narrow boat – especially as you normally only get glimpses into boats from the towing path. Some people are surprised that the boat rocks a little – but we are afloat!”

The Boat Cafe is family run; son Matt runs the cafe day to day, mum Jan Windsor bakes all their cakes, dad Alfie Windsor keeps the boat shipshape and Bristol fashion and son Will Windsor deliverers all their diesel, gas and coal from his working boat The Coal Boat http://www.thecoalboat.co.uk

The café serves made to order hot and cold sandwiches, Bradford on Avon’s best selection of delicious homemade cakes and ice-cream. They have a wide range of teas, coffees hot chocolate and soft drinks. Naturally everything is Fairtrade or locally sourced.

They are open seven days a week from 9 till 5 - later in the summer. Given its fantastic position with lots of passing walkers, cyclists and boaters they provide take-aways and complete picnics. Friendly dogs are welcome. The boat can also be hired for children’s or private parties, for office meals with a difference, or as a unique venue for small business meetings
