40 Years On

IWA Logo Canal enthusiasts celebrate Fortieth anniversary of Shrewsbury, District & North Wales branch - Presentation to long-standing members

The well-attended Annual Meeting of the Shrewsbury, District & North Wales branch of The Inland Waterways Association held in Shrewsbury on Saturday 21 March 2015 marked the fortieth anniversary of the branch.

At the meeting a presentation was made to long-standing members Denis and Janet Farmer of Audlem to mark the start of their twenty-fifth year on the branch committee. The presentation was an atmospheric picture of their boat Leo moored under the historic crane at Audlem, just outside their house. <

Presentation Branch Chairman Michael Limbrey said, "The Inland Waterways Association was founded just after the war to protect and promote our canals and rivers, once so neglected and undervalued. With the growth of interest in the waterways a branch structure was established in the 1970s, and it is now forty years since our branch was set up.

"Our area has some of the most popular canals in the country: they bring visitors from far and wide and make a valuable contribution to the local economy as well as providing an attractive asset for local residents. I believe that the efforts of this Association over those forty years has been important in getting recognition for the value of these waterways.

"As well as the established canals like the Llangollen and the Shropshire Union Main Line through Market Drayton and Audlem our branch area includes three important restoration projects on the Montgomery, Whitchurch and Shrewsbury & Newport Canals which will bring valuable benefits in the future.

"Over the years the branch has had support from many enthusiasts. Janet and Denis Farmer are starting their twenty-fifth year on the branch committee: as stalwart supporters of all the Association stands for they have joined many events across the branch area, often travelling on their boat Leo and, though they parted with Leo recently, they will still be helping us to show how all that our canals offer to this area."

Janet Farmer said, "Denis and I are still reeling from our surprise presentation. The picture is great and now has pride of place in our 'canal room', which is very fitting. We have enjoyed these years attending events, mostly with Leo, and we look forward to joining future waterway events too."
