Heritage Lottery Funds awards grant to restore historic North West vessel the ‘Daniel Adamson’

xxx The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded £3.8million to restore the ‘Daniel Adamson’, a unique surviving part of the North West’s industrial and maritime history.

Built in 1903, the Daniel Adamson initially towed barges and carried people and livestock between the docks at Ellesmere Port and Liverpool. She was refitted with art deco saloons and an elevated promenade deck in 1936 and began a new role transporting guests, including General Dwight D Eisenhower, around the canal. Decommissioned in 1985, she was saved from being scrapped in 2004 when a campaign began to return her to service on the North West’s famous waters.

The Daniel Adamson Preservation Society will restore the vessel to full working order so that she can carry passengers on a programme of cruises on the Mersey, Weaver and Manchester Ship Canal. At other times, she will be moored outside the region’s waterside museums for visitors to explore.
