This cottage on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal is a rare survivor of its type built between 1790 and 1815.Many such handsome unpretentious buildings used to grace our canal system. It has been suggested that sitting here with a cup of tea watching the boats slip by, may be preferable to jumping on and off a boat watching the cottages go by.

Operated by the Landmark Trust, a charity that rescues important buildings that would otherwise be lost. Historic places in danger are sensitively restored. By making them available for holidays, they can be enjoyed by all, both today and for future generations.

Lengthsman's Cottage Lowsonford, Warwickshire - Sleeps 4


South Stratford canal: Lengthsman's Cottage, dating from c1812, was built for the 'lengthsman' who maintained not just the lock but also the stretch of canal to the next lock. With its barrel-roof, it is a rare survivor of its type on the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal.

Newly-opened Summer 2014, this converted canalside building offers luxury accommodation on one level for two people.

From the beautiful lounge with wood burning stove, there are spectacular views across the canal. The kitchen/dining room has a handmade oak kitchen. The large bedroom with vaulted ceiling is perfect for relaxation, with gas effect wood-burning stove and a lavish slipper bath overlooking the canal and mountains beyond. There's also an ensuite wet-room with luxury shower. Underfloor heating is installed throughout. Outside is your very own canalside terrace and woodland to explore. Within a few yards is a parking space.

The cottage is located in the village by the Caledonian Canal, and within walking distance of shops, pubs and restaurants. It is one of the traditional lock keepers cottages on the canal side built around 1830. Now completely renovated and extended, the holiday cottage offers comfortable self catering accommodation.

Your canal side holiday cottage may be close to a day boat hire centre, a short walk to a canal side pub or restaurant for the perfect lazy afternoon or alfresco dining as you watch life on the water slowly pass you by! A canal-side cottage holiday will probably instantly reduce your stress levels. Walk the towpath and view things from a different perspective. Get close up to nature and wildlife.
Many canal paths are also open to cyclists, though there are strict speed limits and a permit is sometimes required. If you fancy a spot of fishing then you may only need your National Rod Licence as some canalside cottages come with fishing rights, and if not it may only cost you a couple of pounds for a local fishing club day ticket.
