Shannon River Boat Hire

Shannon River boat hire is available at the Carrick-on-Shannon boat hire centre.

SygnetsYou can hire a cruiser on the River Shannon through Hoseasons and cruise right up to the source of the Shannon at Lough Allen, via a beautiful tree lined narrow canal, and also the River Boyle at Lough Key. Carrick-on-Shannon is in Southern Ireland or Eire where you will pick up your hire cruiser on the Rivers Shannon and Boyle. There is also the access here to the new Shannon-Erne Waterway.

There are numerous villages and moorings the length of both rivers. There is a lock system controlling the flow of the rivers. Fees are payable to enter the locks: either directly to the lock keeper of by way of a ‘swipe card’.

GongooziesBe sure to visit Lough Key Forest Park and the nearby Boyle, where there is the recently restored 17 th century King Town House and 12 th century Cistercian Abbey.

There is so much else to see.

1. Suggested 2 weeks round trip cruising southwards on the Upper Shannon . Carrick-on-Shannon to Dromod (about 2 hours) to Roosky (about 1 hour) On the lift bridge in Roosky for craft with a high draft plus 1 lock (about 1 hour more) to Tarmonbarry (about 2 hours) On the lift bridge at Lanesborough for craft with a high draft plus 1 lock (about 1 hour more) to Athlone (about 4 hours) plus 1 lock – Shannonbridge (about 2 hours) and return home to Carrick-on-Shannon (about 12 hours) Cruising 240km over 25 hours, 8 locks and 4 lift bridges.

2. Suggested 2 weeks round trip cruising northwards on the Shannon-Erne Waterway (16 locks). Carrick-on-Shannon to Leitrim (about 1 hour) to Ballinamore (about 7 hours) to Ballyconnell (about 3 hours) and return home to Carrick-on-Shannon (about 11 hours) Cruising 96km over 22hours and 28 locks.

3. Suggested 1 week one way cruise Carrick-on-Shannon to Portumna. Cruising 160km over 20 hours, 5 locks and 2 lift bridges.

4. Suggested 1 week one way cruise Carrick-on-Shannon to Belturbet. Cruising 75km over 14 hours and 16 locks.
