Gloucester Docks, UK - River Severn and Gloucester & Sharpness Canal

Your guide to making the most of Gloucester Docks and the River Severn and Gloucester & Sharpness Canal - Gloucester Docks, UK - Gloucester Docks; history, past, today, present, future

Gloucester Docks, UK - Gloucester Docks (history, past, today, present, future Families are being urged to re-acquaint themselves with an historical and heritage gem on their doorstep this summer – Gloucester Docks, UK by way of a fre Gloucester Docks Information Guide.

The fold out full colour guide is packed with Gloucester Docks information and details about how families can make the most of their day exploring the bustling dockside of this historic port.

The guide has been specially commissioned to make families, particularly across Gloucestershire aware of these heritage rich settings right on their doorstep.

In addition to being an attraction in its own right, Gloucester Docks is centrally placed for visitors to strike out further afield along the River Severn and Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.

Granted a charter by Queen Elizabeth I back in 1580, Gloucester’s inland harbour (Gloucester Docks) once traded goods from the four corners of our trading empire. Now its restored buildings and open waterspace bustle with visitors clamouring for its unique mix of traditional heritage and modern retail.

Gloucester Docks, UK - Gloucester Docks (history, past, today, present, future British Waterways' South Wales & Severn Waterway Manager Nick Worthington said the guide was designed to encourage families from the wider catchment area to take a fresh look at this jewel in the city’s crown.

“Gloucester has a wealth of heritage just waiting to be discovered and our fabulous dock system lies at the heart of this. Add walking attractions like the imposing Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and rural visitor hubs like Saul Junction and you have the perfect combination for a family day out,” said Nick.

“All these attractions are readily accessible from the M5 which runs a parallel course to the River Severn and Gloucester & Sharpness Canal – so there’s no excuse to leave Gloucester off your ‘must visit’ list this year,” he added.

The easy to use fold out leaflet contains maps, information and all the contact details visitors need to navigate around this fascinating heritage hub. It will be distributed to over 70,000 homes within the wider Gloucester City catchment area later this month.

A high profile billboard campaign will enforce the message that Gloucester Docks attractions are a must visit venue this summer.

Gloucester Docks, UK - Gloucester Docks (history, past, today, present, future Gloucester Docks warehouses are home to unique hubs like The Gloucester Waterways Museum and five storey Gloucester Docks Antiques Centre.

Linger in Gloucester Docks' waterside bars and restaurants, taking in the surrounding industrial structures, now imaginatively converted into desirable homes and offices. Visit the working dry dock to witness the repair and restoration of magnificent sailing vessels from around the world. Then hop aboard one of the Gloucester Docks marina based cruise boat trips for a spin further out along the river.

Gloucester Docks 'Quays Designer Outlet' lets the visitor mix history with retail therapy. Late opening and an A-List of fashion houses will appeal to the most hardened Gloucester Docks shopping addict visitor.

Gloucester Docks Walk - The adventurous walker can strike out from the southerly point of the docks, where a towpath leads along the imposing Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.

Saul Junction

The Gloucester & Sharpness Canal is unique among UK waterways by virtue of its sheer scale. The broadest and deepest canal in the world when it was completed in 1837, it remains a leviathan of engineering achievement. Huge cargoes of raw material and foodstuffs passed along its 16-mile length, crossing the older Stroudwater Canal at Saul Junction. Now a lively destination in its own right, Saul Junction is a magnet for casual visitor and enthusiast alike. Walkers, anglers, cyclists and boaters congregate at this halfway house along the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal – and it’s easy to see the appeal. Its new marina and new look Stables Café, once home to horses that pulled the first canal boats, are testament to the vibrant popularity of this site. A friendly heritage centre and relaxing boat cruises make for a perfect leisure cocktail. Nearby Frampton-on-Severn boasts the longest village green in England, plus a fine public house in The Bell. Further down lies Patch Bridge, gateway to the world renowned Wetlands & Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge.
