Boat Fenders and Narrowboat Fenders
Boat fenders . A GRP cruiser will need a great deal of protection, particularly in locks, where it at its most vulnerable to damage to the hull. Many cruiser owners use sausage style fenders down the sides, balloon fenders either side of the bow, ‘V’ shaped boat fenders at the bow and ‘L’ shaped fenders, sometimes one above the other, fixed to each of the corners at the stern transom.
On some bigger cruisers there are fender lockers or racks are provided for stowing the boat fenders when cruising.
Narrowboat fenders are a different kettle of fish – Usually made from ‘rope’ and of a more solid nature. Most narrowboat fenders take the shape or form of buttons at the bow and stern. The bow button protects the boat and minimises damage to locks etc. The stern narrowboat button protects the rudder. The sides of the narrowboat are protected by rubbing strakes. These rubbing strakes are generally the full length of the boat tack welded every foot or so (to facilitate easy replacement) We still fitted side fender eyes to accommodate thin rope, pipe or rubber side fenders.
Plaited rope down the side of the narrowboat is another (attractive) option but prone to catching on rough objects.
