Dudley Canal Trust - Dudley Canal Tunnel Learning and Access Hub

Sketch by permission of Pleydell Smithyman, Ironbridge for Dudley Canal Trust - Dudley Canal Tunnel Learning and Access Hub

Dudley Canal Trust is developing plans for an exciting and innovative new Learning and Access Hub.

The Hub will help enhance the experience for existing and future visitors and provide more opportunities to learn about the
site’s internationally significant heritage.

Situated off the A4123 at (Dudley Canal Tunnel and Limestone Mines Northern Portal), Birmingham New Road, Dudley, West Midlands, DY1 4SB - MAP.

Dudley Canal Trust - Dudley Canal Tunnel Learning and Access Hub“Dudley Canal Trust strongly believes that the development of a Learning and Access Hub is an exciting opportunity which will not only enhance and support the significant heritage treasure that is the Canal and Limestone Mine but will also benefit the wider Castle Hill Area. We are working with a variety of organisations, bodies and groups, but most importantly we need the support of the public to help make this project a reality”. June Hodgetts, General Manager, Dudley Canal Trust Trips Limited

Dudley Canal Tunnel welcomes around 80,000 visitors a year to explore the canal tunnel and limestone caverns under Castle Hill. Managed and operated by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers the Canal Tunnel offers visitors a trip back in time and the chance to learn about the Black Country of the 19th Century, the history and formation of the Limestone and the fossils within the tunnel. The Learning and Access Hub will also celebrate the role of the Birmingham Canal Navigations in the Industrial Revolution and its positive impact on the Black Country
and the wider region.

The Trust is working hard to secure funding for the Hub which will contain a range of exciting new facilities showcasing the canal tunnels and limestone mines, providing a resource which befits their rich history. The Hub will enable the trust to:-

• Create opportunities for visitors to learn about the site’s history and heritage.

• Make the site accessible for visitors of all ages and abilities.

• Provide more opportunities for special events and activities.

• Celebrate the history of the canals and the people who use to work on them.

• Offer visitors the opportunity to learn more about the canal’s archaeological, geological and industrial heritage.

• Improve the operational efficiency of the boat trips.

To work towards securing funding and achieving our goals, we need to be able to illustrate that the project has public support.

We have therefore launched a campaign to get as many people as possible to visit our website - www.dudleycanaltrust.org.uk and click on the “support our Learning and Access Hub” tab. As the project continues to move forward our website will also provide updates and further opportunities to get involved.

The Trust is currently developing plans hard to make this project a reality as we believe ultimately the project will benefit not just visitors to the Canal Tunnel but also local residents and the Castle Hill tourism economy.
