Shropshire Union Canal

Middlewich Arm

Middlewich Arm of the Shropshire Union Canal between Middlewich, Cheshire and Barbridge Junction, Wardle in Cheshire just off the A51 trunk road about 2 miles north of Nantwich.

There is only ten miles of the Middlewich Arm of the Shropshire Union Canal. It was constructed in 1833, connecting to the Shropshire Union at a section that was originally the Chester Canal in the west to the Trent and Mersey Canal in the east.

At Middlewich Kings Lock Junction and the start of the Middlewich Arm of the Shropshire Union Canal, boats can be hired from Andersen Boats or Middlewich Narrowboats .

Owl-ocalThe Kings Lock Pub has a pleasant bar with the ‘Owl Ocal’ (Our Local) canal boat theme with adjoining simple bistro style dining.

There is a Fish and Chip shop on the opposite side of the canal.

Lock keepers cottageOnce through the lock at Middlewich Junction with the adjoining picturesque lock keepers cottage this leg of the four counties ring begins. The canal winds its way gently through a primarily rural landscape with a few really great vistas across the rolling Cheshire countryside.

Venetian villageCrossing the River Weaver hidden below in a heavily wooded valley after about six miles from Middlewich.

About two miles before Barbridge Junction there is ‘Venetian Village’ Marina and Kate’s chandlery. At Barbridge Junction there is another chandlery at Midway Boats Limited.

A few metres south of the junction there is a British Waterways Service and Information Point.
