British Waterways Kicks Off 2008 Season with a Crinan Canal - Ardrishaig, Argyll, update.
British Waterways Scotland addressed a public meeting for the Ardrishaig community on Thursday, 6th of March 2008, and took the opportunity to unveil a new partnership to progress its development plans in the area surrounding the Crinan Canal.
The "Ardrishaig Masterplan" has been developed in partnership with Ardrishaig’s Community, Argyll and Bute Council, HIE Argyll and the Islands and British Waterways Scotland, and provides a development framework which will guide the redevelopment of Ardrishaig’s waterfront. Integral to the plan is the opportunity to enhance the built environment, maximising residential, business, leisure, tourist cruising and yachting potential.
British Waterways Scotland is considering options to ensure that the scheme can be developed to deliver regeneration aspirations for Ardrishaig.
James McLellan, chief executive of Argyll and Bute Council, commented that: “The Council has been working in partnership with British Waterways, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the local community to take forward the Ardrishaig Masterplan." - “The aim of this plan is to deliver on the vision of Ardrishaig as a vibrant, sustainable community, which is an attractive place to live, work and visit. The masterplan is still at draft stage and will be the subject of ongoing discussion with the community before final approval. The Council welcomes the commitment from British Waterways, not only in the development of the masterplan, but in its delivery to secure regeneration and the revitalisation of the Ardrishaig community. I look forward to that continuing into the future.”
Mark Smith, Strategic Planning Manager for British Waterways Scotland, with a background in community regeneration, said: “Working with our partners we want to progress with plans to enhance Ardrishaig’s waterfront. The masterplan provides a framework upon which detailed proposals can now be worked up. Most importantly, we look forward to continuing working with Ardrishaig’s community to ensure what we deliver benefits to those who live in, work in and visit Ardrishaig.”
