Lough Erne - Northern Ireland / Eire

Lough Erne refers to two lakes in Northern Ireland, situated along the River Erne. The waterway is mostly situated in County Fermanagh but has shores in Eire.

Besides the beautiful countryside and peaceful tranquillity there are a number of places of interest around Lough Erne worth a visit:

The famous Belleek Pottery opened in 1857 manufacturing heavy earthenware which developed over the years to become the highly acclaimed creator of fine china which is known the world over today. The visitors centre here is open April to October.

Coole Castle - Dating from 1798, the family home of the Earls of Belmore – Now a renovated National Trust property.

Florencecourt - An area rich in heritage with a history which spans some 9,000 years. There are a few sites of historical interest, which highlight this part of Ireland ’s long link with the past.

Lough Erne boat hire is available at the Belturbet (Eire) Boat Hire Centre. You can hire a cruiser on Lough Erne through Hoseasons and cruise the labyrinth of Upper Lough Erne. Belturbet is in Southern Ireland or Eire where you will pick up your hire cruiser. The biggest area of Lough Erne is in the county of Enniskillen in Northern Ireland or Ulster .

Suggested round trip cruise from Belturbet of one week - Northwards from Belturbet to Enneskillen (about 4 hours) to Belleek (about 5 hours) returning to Belturbet (about 9 hours) Cruising 130km about 18 hours cruising without any locks.

Suggested one way cruise from Belturbet of one week – North then Westwards from Belturbet to Carrick-on-Shannon. Cruising on Lough Erne, Garadice Lough and The Shannon Canal . Cruising 75km in about 14 hours cruising with 16 locks.

Suggested round trip cruise from Belturbet of two weeks – Southwards from Belturbet on the Shannon-Erne Waterway to Ballyconnell (about 3 hours) to Ballinamore (about 3 hours) to Leitrim (about 7 hours) to Carrick-on-Shannon (about 1 hour) and return to Belturbet (about 14 hours) Total cruising 150km about 28 hours with 32 locks.
