Hatherton Canal
The Hatherton Canal, in Staffordshire, was part of the main canal system
linking the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal to the coal mines of Cannock
at Hatherton Junction, Calfs Heath.
The Hatherton Canal was opened in 1841. Later in 1860 the it was connected to the Cannock Extension Canal by way of a flight of locks at Churchbridge between Cannock and Cheslyn
Hay. This gave a new northern trade outlet to the Black Countries thriving industry. Unfortunately in 1955 there was a major subsidence, caused by mining beneath the canal, which wiped out the locks and with them the connection to the main canal system. The rest of this canal was then abandoned, much of it filled in.
The Lichfield and Hatherton Restoration Trust was inaugurated in 1988 to work and campaign towards the renovation and reopening of the original four mile long Hatherton Canal and its eight locks.
We are looking for an extended article of 200 to 1000 words of original copy and images from anyone who can improve on the information above. Plus other articles about anything related to the canals of Great Britain.
