Caldon Canal - 1940's - Churnet Valley Railway
We visited the Churnet Valley Railway (CVR) at Cheddleton Station in late July 2007 whilst cruising the Caldon Canal (Main Line and Leek Branch) from Etruria Junction on the Trent and Mersey Canal to Froghall Basin in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
Cheddleton Station and steam railway is but a couple of hundred meters from the main line Caldon Canal at Bridge 44 (Boat Inn). It is free of charge to visit the station where you may be fortunate enough to catch sight of the children's storybook favorites Thomas (the tank engine) and Friends.
With the Fat Controller is situ, on the station platform keeping everything strictly on time. Absorb the atmosphere full of steam, smoke and smuts! And watch the enthusiastic volunteers, playing their part whether it be on the footplate or level crossing. Charges apply to ride the trains.
The station here is themed to reflect the 'age of steam' with loaded porters barrows and ephemera of that bygone era. The Churnet Valley Railway is 'The Railway in the Valley' with 'Open' stations at Cheddleton and Kingsley & Froghall. The railway also passes through Consall and Leekbrook stations.
Consall station is approximately 5 minutes' walk from the Black Lion Inn at Consall Forge, Roving Bridge 49.
Kingsley & Froghall station is approximately 10 minutes' walk from the Caldon Canal at Froghall Basin Wharf, follow the road from Froghall Tunnel (down hill) to the main A52 and turn right. Kingsley & Froghall station is on the left hand side of the road.
If you are not on a boat you can of course get there by road. Cheddleton village is on the A520 Leek to Stone road between Leek and Cellarhead. Upon entering Cheddleton village, follow the brown tourist signs that direct you along either Station Road or Basford Bridge Lane both will bring you to Cheddleton station. The station is approximately 1.5km or 1 mile from the main A520.
The Kingsley & Froghall station is on the A52 Stoke on Trent to Ashbourne road at Froghall, access is by 'The Railway Inn' pub. Both stations have large car parks and disabled facilities.
