Buckingham Canal - Grand Union Canal
AKA The 'Old Stratford Cut' (Disused)
Originally part of the Grand Junction Canal scheme,
now the Grand Union
Canal

The Buckingham Canal was killed off by the Bletchley to Banbury Railway
that
opened in 1850 and due to lack of maintenance was effectively dammed up in 1944
at the first bridge to stop water leaking out of the mainline GUC.
The Buckingham Canal Society is active in protecting the line of the Buckingham
Canal between the junction at Cosgrove, above Cosgrove Lock, that follows
the River Great Ouse westwards quite closely through Old Stratford, where the
canal arm met the old Roman Road an important national highway - Watling Street,
onto Buckingham town.
There are apparently a number of reasons why the Buckingham Canal / Old Stratford
Cut should be reinstated, not only would the canal bring employment to the
area and be a new economic resource there would be advantages for more active
leisure and tourism, the natural environment and restored heritage sites.
The Buckingham Arm was officially abandoned by the British Transport Commission,
now British Waterways (BW) and ownership of the canal has passed into the
private sector, the former towpath is, in Buckinghamshire, part of the Ouse Valley
Walk.
The Buckingham Canal Society (BCS) was founded in early 1992 and is a Registered
Charity #1072924.
