Campbell Christie CBE, Chairman
of British Waterways Scotland Group Retires After 10 Years at the Helm
The retirement of Campbell Christie CBE, Chairman of British Waterways Scotland
Group was celebrated in style at the iconic Falkirk Wheel on Wednesday
21 May 2008

Over 150 people joined in the celebrations, congratulating and thanking
Mr Christie for his inspirational dedication to British Waterways Scotland.
Mr Christie has served on the board of British Waterways and as Chairman of
British Waterways Scotland for 10 years, fully committing himself to improving
and enhancing Scotland’s greatest assets, the canals. He has guided British
Waterways Scotland through the re-birth of the Union and Forth & Clyde canals,
The Falkirk Wheel, Edinburgh Quay, Port Dundas and Auchinstarry to name a few,
constantly focussed on bringing the canals of Scotland to life.
This ex-trades unionist has clearly understood the potential of Scotland’s
canals and their uniqueness, touching upon so many areas such as tourism, leisure,
regeneration, economic development, the environment and heritage. And his passion
for the canals in Scotland is evident in his legacy laying down the foundations
for the future of British Waterways Scotland and no doubt will continue to be
a keen observer of the continued transformation of Scotland’s canals.
Campbell Christie said: “It has been a great opportunity for me to be
involved in British Waterways Scotland for so long. The canals of Scotland are
magnificent and are truly a national asset. They are there to be enjoyed by everyone.
British Waterways Scotland is dedicated to developing and regenerating areas
around the canals and this will continue well in to the future. I look forward
to seeing the many wonderful ideas flourish.”
Stewart Stevenson, MSP, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate
Change said: “The renaissance of Scotland’s canals over the past
decade was driven in no small part by Campbell Christie. Campbell’s leadership
as Vice Chairman of the British Waterways Board has enabled the canals of Scotland
to play an important part of people’s lives.
“I am sure British Waterways Scotland will continue the great work started
by Campbell; contributing to Scotland’s leisure, tourism and health through
activities such as boating, fishing, walking and cycling; continuing their economic
regeneration and development drive; and contributing to the protection of our
natural heritage.”
