The website includes River and Inland Waterways information.Winter Canal Cruising TipsBoating in winter is a whole new ball game. You might get the impression from all those sunny scenes in the Hire Boat brochures that canal cruising is a summer only activity. In fact winter cruising is just as much, if not better fun, once the autumn leaves have fallen you can see more of the countryside and wildlife and you'll find even the most popular cruising canals more peaceful and realy relaxing. The canalside pubs and restaurants are still there serving warming home cooked meals too! Stay safe with these top tips for boating in colder weather.1. Stay safe - If you encounter an emergency on the canal network call British Waterways on their first response freephone number 0800 47 999 47 (chargeable from mobiles). 2. River levels - Thawing snow and heavy rain upstream will quickly raise water levels. Remember this especially when mooring up and navigating low bridges on rivers. 3. Keep warm - Ensure you have enough fuel in your diesel tanks to maintain the craft and remember to order enough fuel for your stoves to sustain you through the worst of the winter. Check any delays with coal boats particularly if the canal is frozen over. 4. Beware of icy surfaces: take extra care around and crossing over locks; getting on and off the boat and using lock ladders and don’t rely on anti-slip surfaces. 5. Keep a eye out for obstructions in the canal either from maintenance operations or fallen trees. 6. Check for any planned stoppages before your journey, the latest information can be found on www.britishwaterways.co.uk or by phoning "Canalphone" on 01923 201401. 7. At facilities - report problems – don’t assume someone else already has (call 0845 6715530) - make sure you turn the water tap off properly after use and try to avoid creating a mini ice rink around the water point. 8. Ice! Don’t cruise if the ice is thick. It’s hard work for your engine and may damage the hull of your craft and that of others. And of course, don't be tempted to walk on the canal when it’s frozen no matter how thick it looks! 9. Wrap up warm, insulate your feet against the cold deck and take shorter turns at the helm. Ensure hot drinks are at the ready. 10. Wear gloves when handling ropes and frozen metal work. However, remember to take extra care if your hands or feet are cold, when you’re wearing very thick gloves, you will lose some of the sensitivity you need to judge safe moves. | SCARED OF SWITCHING? ![]() Canal, Waterways, Club And Society Events Diary FREE Canal Route Planner Link FREE ENTRY UK MUSEUMS Solar Energy Equipment Marine Paint Calculator |
