Thames21 Case Study - Project 2010

Who Are Thames21? - Thames21 is an urban environmental charity that challenges Londoners to don boots and gloves and work together to improve London’s rivers and canals.

Thames21 volunteers hard at work - Who Are Thames21?

The Waterways TrustThe project: This year The Waterways Trust has awarded £4,800 from its Thames Appeal to Thames21. Thames21 will be using this funding to extend its work into new stretches of the river, encouraging even more people to help improve this wonderful waterway.

Through this exciting project, Thames21 will work with communities on key stretches of the Thames, tapping into the natural enthusiasm that exists in the riverside neighbourhoods at Cookham Lock, Desborough Island in Shepperton and Penton Lock and Island in Laleham.

Thames21 will be encouraging local residents to connect with the river by taking part in a range of activities such as making improvements to the aquatic environment by clearing litter, cutting back vegetation to improve access, promoting discovery walks on Desborough Island and improving wildlife habitat by installing nesting boxes.

Chief Executive of Thames21 Debbie Leach said, “We help and support enthusiastic volunteers across the tidal Thames, London’s canal network and tributaries. Now, thanks to The Waterways Trust, we can provide more opportunities to everyone who cares about the river further upstream.”

Last year Thames21 worked with over 8000 volunteers to improve many parts of the 400 miles of waterways that span London, making those waterways more inviting and encouraging people to make use of the rivers and canals that are so often neglected.
