T R Boat Handling - Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Recognised Teaching Establishment

WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER AN RYA RECOGNISED TRAINING COURSE

Whether you are new to boating or experienced over a period of years, everyone has a duty to ensure the safety of their crew and craft. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate (IWHC) will give that confidence and make any holiday whether on your own or a hired boat much more pleasurable. The certificate is also the first step for the experienced boater to achieve the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), an essential requirement for people wishing to boat on European waterways.

The IWHC assumes that students have no previous experience and was developed jointly by the RYA and British Waterways to provide the practical knowledge and skills for the safe and proficient navigation of our inland waterways.

ABOUT THE COURSES:

ONE DAY - An intensive one-day course for the IWHC. The course covers all aspects of canal and river navigation.

TWO DAY - A more relaxed course for the IWHC staying on board overnight.

THREE DAY - Particularly popular with both novice and experienced boaters. A relaxed course for the IWHC staying on board whereby after successful completion there is plenty of time to practice the skills achieved while enjoying a short break holiday and pleasure of the waterways.

WHAT DOES THE IWHC COVER?

DECK WORK incorporating rope work, knots and mooring.
HELMSMANSHIP and boat handling including steering, speed control, turning, reversing, berthing and unberthing, refloating after grounding and recovery of man overboard.
PERSONAL SAFETY including risk identification, buoyancy aids, injury avoidance and special risks to children.
BOAT SAFETY including fire hazards, gas safety, use and application of fire extinguishers.
ENGINES basic engine care, routine and periodic checks.
LOCKS operation and lock safety.
BRIDGES AND TUNNELS understanding safety and techniques.
COLLISION AVOIDANCE including rules for steering, defensive boating, bylaws and local regulations.
ENVIRONMENT avoiding damage to other boats, banks, flora and fauna, pollution, canal and river etiquette.

THINKING OF EUROPE? If you are considering entering the inland waterways of Europe you will need the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). To obtain the ICC you will need to produce an RYA Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of a relevant practical course.

CEVNI (European Inland Waterway Regulations)
Whilst often passing through areas of spectacular scenery, many of the European waterways are busy and routes for commercial traffic.
To navigate these routes safely you will need to know CEVNI (European Inland Waterway Regulations) whose rules, signs, symbols and signals are understood and used by skippers of all nations.

Boatmaster Licence Courses
A course for those wishing or needing to obtain the M.C.A. - Maritime Coastguard Agency Grade 3 licence which covers Class V Passenger Vehicles on category A waters.

FOR UP TO DATE COSTS see the website.

All the above courses include hot and cold drinks throughout the day and light lunch, IWHC certificates on successful completion and RYA inland cruising book.

Two and three day courses also include staying on board overnight and a light or cooked breakfast.

ICC and CEVNI - These courses include coaching the RYA book of European Regulations for Inland Waterways. The CEVNI test.
