New Canal Officer Will Connect East Manchester Residents With Canal

Rhys Wynne - Canal Community Liaison Officer with The Waterways Trust

People living in Miles Platting and Newton Heath in Manchester will be getting closer to nature along the Rochdale Canal thanks to the work of Rhys Wynne.

Rhys is the new Canal Community Liaison Officer with The Waterways Trust and will be working with communities in the East Manchester area over the next two years, to help them get the most from the wildlife-rich waterway.

Rhys explains: “Through our Canal Connections East Manchester project, which is funded by Natural England as part of its Access to Nature programme, we will be creating opportunities for local people to play an active role in the interpretation, promotion and care of their local natural environment, helping to build a strong sense of ownership of the canal.

“We will also be putting together a range of training, learning and volunteering opportunities to enable people living in the area get out and discover this waterway. In addition, there will be activities to help people improve their health and wellbeing such as free guided nature walks.”

Rhys previously worked with Salford Council, where he helped transform a garden at an over 60’s housing scheme from an unused and uninspiring piece of land into a valuable community resource, where residents could grow their own fruit and vegetables and take exercise.

Rhys is looking forward to using his skills on the Rochdale Canal, “I’m really looking forward to enabling the community to get involved with artists to help them to celebrate the canal and the wildlife that lives there.” he said.
