Moored barges are being used and deliveries are also being made by barges travelling along the canal. At St John’s Wood most of the work is taking place within the substation with some minor works taking place on the canal towpath. The towpath may be closed in some places for short periods, but diversions will be in place and cyclists may be asked to dismount. There will be a health and safety officer present at all times while work is taking place. National Grid Project Engineer Rajesh Balakrishnan said: “Using Regent’s Canal to transport our equipment will reduce the risk of traffic congestion on the roads. Local people and canal and towpath users can rest assured that we will do all we can to minimise any disruption.” He added: “Our use of Regent’s Canal for this essential project represents another chapter in the long and varied history of a historic waterway which dates back to the 19th century.” Work is being carried out by the Electricity Alliance, a partnership between National Grid, AMCO and Balfour Beatty. Normal working hours will be 8am–7pm, Monday to Friday.
