Alperton Visitor Moorings - Grand Union Canal, Paddington Arm

The Grand Union Canal runs through the heart of Alperton about 7 miles from Bulls Bridge Junction and 6 miles from Little Venice and Paddington Basin

Alperton Visitor Moorings - Grand Union Canal, Paddington Arm

Alperton 7 day VM are between Manor Farm Road Bridge and Ealing Road Bridge, adjacent to the Alperton Sainsbury's store on Glacier way, Alperton.

There is enough room for around ten 60' boats but only a few bollards in the immediate vicinity of the store entrance way.

The water Point mentioned in Canal Guides has been disestablished.

We spent a couple of nights on these moorings. The tow path is quite busy during the day but very quiet at night. We had no problems here and would use these again. We did see Comunity Support Officers patroling on a couple of occasions.

Besides the large Sainsbury's store there is a small shopping area on Ealing Road close to Alperton Underground (Tube) Station, about 300m north from the Ealing Road Bridge. Alperton is a London Underground station, in Zone 4, on the Uxbridge branch of the Piccadilly Line. The station is between Sudbury Town and Park Royal.

London Transport Bus Stops K, H & L are the other side of Sainsbury's in Glacier Way, for bus services to Edgeware (79), Wembley Stadium (224), Willesden Junction (224), Golders Green (245), Ealing Broadway (297), Willesden (297). Stop G is out on the junction of Ealing Road for Golders Green (83) and stop D and C are by the Alperton Bus Garage on Bridgewater Road (by the traffic lights) for South Harrow (487) and Willesden Junction (487).

Wembley 'High Street Shops, Banks and Wembly Central Mainline Station is just over a kilometer up the Ealing Road (Bus 224 stop K)

There was no resident mooring warden when we visited in 2010 but is patroled by the BW Enforcement Officer weekly (or should we say weakly?).

Alperton is a suburb in the London Borough of Brent in northwest London. It is included in the Wembley post town area. Dominated by the Ealing Road, which is the backbone of the area.

Alperton today is said to have one of the most diverse communities in the UK. There is a incredible high number of Indians living in Alperton (about 75% of the population are Indian). There is also a large Sri Lankan community in Alperton (possibly 15%, with 10% stated as others).

Ealing Road is the heart of Alperton, comprising of Indian restaurants as well as general goods. Traditional fruit and veg outlets also operate from Ealing road where the locals come to buy exotic fruit and veg not normally available in supermarkets all year round.

Other points of interest in the area:

The Peruvudaiyar Kovil or Brihadeeswarar Temple also known as Rajarajeswaram, at Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. There is an interesting Hindu Mandir (Shiva Temple) on Ealing Road, Alperton that appears to have been modeled on the Brihadeshwara temple - The Peruvudaiyar Kovil or Brihadeeswarar Temple also known as Rajarajeswaram, at Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Launderettes: Laundercentre, 7 Bilton Road, South Greenford, Greenford, UB6 7AY (off Manor Farm Road, south of Manor Farm Road Bridge) / Launderette, 62 Bilton Road, South Greenford, Greenford, UB6 7DH 62 (off Manor Farm Road, south of Manor Farm Road Bridge)

Post Office: Post Office Ltd, 68-70 Bilton Road

Banks: Barclays Bank PLC, 220 Ealing Road / HSBC, 245 Ealing Road

Parks: One Tree Hill in Alperton - One Tree Hill recreation ground was procured by the community shortly after 1914.

Events: One particular event which takes place on Ealing Road is the Divali parade, a festival of the Hinduism and Sikhism religion.

History: In 1801 the Grand Junction Canal was cut through Alperton. Its effect on trade was immediate. It created work handling shipments of sand, hay, gravel and coal. By 1851 passenger boats were carrying sightseers on trips to the 'Pleasure Boat' pub. In the medieval and Tudor and Stuart periods the area had been famous for stag hunting. It now became "a celebrated resort for anglers." The coming of the railway to Wembley in 1842 harmed passenger barge traffic, but Alperton's countryside remained a popular place to visit. Postcards featuring "Greetings from Alperton" were readily available around 1900!
