Restoration Work Gets Underway On The Droitwich Junction Canal To Complete The Mid Worcestershire Ring

The Mid Worcestershire ring stands on the verge of completion with work getting underway on the last section of the Droitwich Canals Restoration Project.

Restoration Work Gets Underway On The Droitwich Junction Canal To Complete The Mid Worcestershire Ring

The canal restoration work, along the River Salwarpe between Swan Drive and Vines Park in Droitwich, will connect the Droitwich Barge Canal and Droitwich Junction Canal.

British Waterways Senior Regeneration Manager Jason Leach said that the work would involve deepening the existing river channel to create a navigable stretch of water together with installing a new towpath along the southern side of the river.

“The work on the River Salwarpe is part of a much larger scheme to regenerate both the Droitwich Barge Canal and the Droitwich Junction Canal to allow a 21 mile canal link connected to the wider waterway network. The project is a culmination of more than 35 years of community-led campaigning to restore the canals,” he said.

Paul Middlebrough, Leader of Wychavon District Council, said: "The complete restoration of the Droitwich Canals, which is so close now, is a fantastic achievement for all those involved in the project. The canals will be a boost for the local community and businesses and will provide the opportunity for people to explore their local heritage and countryside as never before. We are proud to be part of this project."

Volunteer partnerships have been at work along the canal corridor for many years, focusing on sites of natural importance. This is only the start of the new life for the canal and there are still plenty of opportunities to get involved in the volunteer programme.
