The Cotswold Canals

BBC One's Country File 25th April 2010 Highlighted The Restoration Of The Cotswold Canals

The Cotswold Canals Stroudwater Navigation Thames and Severn CanalThe Cotswolds Canals Partnership we learned is the prime mover behind the restoration of the Cotswold Canals (MAP). The Members of the partnership comprise of: The Waterways Trust; Cotswold Canals Trust; Stroud District Council; South West Regional Development Agency; Gloucestershire County Council; Wiltshire Council; Gloucestershire First; Gloucestershire Rural Community Council; Environment Agency; Gloucestershire Society for Industrial Archaeology; Learning & Skills Council; Cotswold Water Park Society; Inland Waterways Association; National Heritage Training Academy (SW); South West Tourism; Company of Proprietors of the Stroudwater Navigation and Cotswold District Council.

The Cotswold Canals themselves are made up of the Stroudwater Navigation (7 miles / 12km) from Bath (at Wallbridge) to Saul on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and the Thames and Severn Canal (29 miles / 46km) From Bath to the River Thames near Lechlade.

This project may see the connection of England`s two greatest rivers; the Thames and the Severn for the first time in over seventy years if the Saul to River Severn Section is ever sompleted.

This restoration project is hoped to provide opportunities for many people by acting as a catalyst for continuing social, economic and environmental regeneration whilst safeguarding the canal's future for everyone to enjoy. The reinstatement of the Cotswold Canals will create a new cruising ring - The Cotswold Cruising Ring.
