Success For Cotswold Canals!

Supporters of the Cotswold Canals voted in their droves and have helped win £60,000 for the restoration project.

The restoration of the Cotswolds Canals was selected by ITV’s People’s Millions Lottery programme to face a public vote on Wednesday 29 June. Thanks to this win, the Cotswold Canals Partnership will be able to create a heritage trail and improve the towpath alongside the canal creating better access to Stroud town centre.

Kim Chester, Development Manager for The Waterways Trust, said: “We are absolutely delighted and would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped us – project supporters who took part in the filming day, the Highways Agency for the use of alert signs to promote the project and to everyone who voted for us.

“This win shows just how much the restoration of the canal means to people. The improvements will help to provide better walking routes to and from the town centre and the heritage trail will help to bring Stroud’s amazing history to life.”

The Cotswold Canals Trust (previously the Stroudwater and Thames and Severn Canal Trust) is a charity that aims to protect and restore the Stroudwater Navigation and the Thames and Severn Canal. The group was founded in 1972.

The current aim is to restore the canals between Saul junction and the Thames. Among other activities over 1000 hours has been put into clearing the canal between Lechlade and Sapperton

The trust ran monthly trips into the Sapperton Tunnel until these were halted for conservancy reasons. An agreement allowing them to restart was reached in 2006 between the trust and English Nature.

The trust has a partnership with the Rural Skills Centre at the Royal Agricultural College. This has allowed volunteers to learn how to operate diggers, chainsaws and brush cutters.
