The Pied Piper Of Ellesmere Port Raises £2,500 For Breakthrough Breast Cancer

Celia Webber, from Ellesmere Port, walked the entire length of towpath from Ellesmere Port to Birmingham (83.3 miles), and most of the way back, to raise money during Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October).

‘Towpath Trundle’ - The Pied Piper Of Ellesmere Port

Celia’s ‘Towpath Trundle’ took place from the 16th to the 30th October to raise funds and awareness for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, a charity dedicated to the prevention, treatment and ultimate eradication of breast cancer.

The Pied Piper Of Ellesmere Port - ‘Towpath Trundle’63 year old Celia was followed along the way by a crew of merry men (and women) on a canal boat, generously donated by Welsh Gateway Canal Holidays of Nantwich. She encouraged people to join in along the way and had people cheering her on along the route.

The crew and friends, adorned in their finest pink threads, fundraised along the way and raised an impressive £2,500 through donations to her collection cans and through her Just Giving site www.JustGiving.com/Celia_Webber, (which is still open for further donations).

The Pied Piper Of Ellesmere Port - ‘Towpath Trundle’Celia’s Towpath Trundle went through stops in Ellesmere Port, Beeston, Nantwich, Audlem, Cheswardine, Brewood, Wolverhampton, Birmingham’s Gas Street Basin, the Black Country Museum, Autherley, Radford Bridge nr Stafford, Stone, Kidsgrove, Wheelock, Barbridge and ended at Nantwich Basin – with Celia walking roughly 142 miles and the crew working 142 locks.

Celia says: “We had really fantastic support throughout this event and it’s with thanks to everyone along the way that we’ve managed to raise such a fantastic amount. I had breast cancer myself but I have also lost members of my close family to the disease, with the next generation at high risk, so it’s a cause that is incredibly close to my heart. I have seen first hand the benefit of Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s work and want to continue to raise vital money whilst having fun and involving other people along the way.”

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, with nearly 46,000 women and around 300 men diagnosed with the disease each year. All the money raised from the event will help Breakthrough Breast Cancer continue to fund groundbreaking research, campaign for better services and treatments and raise awareness of breast cancer. Through this work the charity believes passionately that the disease can be beaten and the fear of breast cancer removed for good.
