Canal & River Trust - C&RT Elections 2012

Canal & River Trust (C&RT) Charity 2012

Canal & River Trust logoIn October 2011 it was announced that the new charity being established to tend British Waterways' 2,000 miles of canals and rivers in England and Wales would be called the Canal & River Trust. The Trust is now due to launch fully in April 2012.

In the March 2010 Budget, the Government announced plans for British Waterways (BW) to be changed into a mutual organisation. This has now come to pass, with Council Elections taking place in March 2012

BW welcomed the proposal, which it has been requesting for several years. The Canal & River Trust has divorced the old organisation and will allow the organisation more say over how it raises and spends money and would help it plug a £30m ($45.6m) shortfall in its proposed budget.

The Canal & River Trust will have more freedom to access grants and charitable funds.

Canal & River Trust Council Ballot Paper

The first ballot, that will be counted by the Single Transferable Vote method, for Private Boaters to elect candidates to the Canal & River Trust Council will close on Friday 9th March, 2012 has attracted 43 candidates.

British Waterways Scotland is to remain state-owned.
