When navigating the West Midlands waterways you will require a water conservation key - A small tool that opens paddle gear locks.

British Waterways (BW) Lock Keys - Water Conservation Lock Tool - Canal 'Handcuff Key' You will not be able to cruise very far on the West Midlands canal system without a 'water conservation key' or 'handcuff key' as many locks have been fitted with spring loaded dead bolts. The additional security locks that are fitted discreetly into lock mechanisms are easy to operate.

1. Insert the tool into the security device aperture and turn the key until the sprung bolt shoots back.

2. When the bolt releases the mechanism, withdraw the tool and wind the lock paddle gear as normal.

3. Once the lock gear has been lowered press the sprung bolt back in.
