Scottish Canals

Soak up Summer Safely on and around Scottish Canals

Soak up Summer Safely on and around Scottish Canals

With over 25 million visits along Scotland’s 137-mile canal network each year, British Waterways Scotland wants to remind those making the most of the outdoors this summer to enjoy the canals safely.

Our local canals provide an ideal location to soak up the sunshine, walk, jog, cycle or perhaps enjoy a spot of sailing or fishing.

Soak up Summer Safely on and around Scottish CanalsAny open body of water can, however, be potentially dangerous, particularly for unsupervised children or anyone under the influence of alcohol, so British Waterways Scotland would urge everyone to be careful whilst enjoying the beauty the canals have to offer, and especially urge parents/guardians to educate their children about being safe by the water.

Soak up Summer Safely on and around Scottish CanalsInviting as our canals may look for a splash in nice weather, everyone should resist the temptation as swimming, diving and jumping in are strictly prohibited activities.  Scotland’s canals vary in depth and the water temperature can fluctuate.  Although canals are regarded as ‘still’ water, currents are created from canal traffic and other water movements that can prove unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

British Waterways Scotland is keen to make sure everyone is able to enjoy the many water-based and towpath activities by remembering the rules and staying safe.

Phil Martin of British Waterways Scotland said:  “Canals are a fantastic, free attractions and can be enjoyed by everyone - safely.  We encourage everyone to come this summer and take full advantage of the huge range of activities available on Scotland’s canals, and we want to ensure they do this safely, which is why we are issuing this reminder.  We hope that when people come to visit their local canal this summer they will remember to respect one of Scotland’s most treasured assets and have good safe fun!”
