Aylsham Navigation Moving Forward?

The Aylsham Navigation Project 2012  is holding a meeting on January 18th at The Lounge, Coltishall Village Hall, Rectory Road, Coltishall, Norfolk at 7.30 pm.

Coltishall & Horstead Lock early 20th Century - Aylsham Navigation Moving Forward?

The project plans to celebrate the centenary of the navigation's closure in August 1912 following devastating floods by researching and publishing a definitive history, holding a celebratory event involving the wherry Albion and an attempt to carry a token cargo to Aylsham by canoe from Coltishall. The project also hopes to establish a permanent waterside trail along the whole length of the navigation to celebrate both the history and the wild life which now flourishes here. This is an often forgotten navigation in Norfolk which if still in existence would add a further 9.5 miles and 5 locks to the Broads cruising area. The project chairman says that "this is about celebrating our waterways heritage and preserving it for future generations. We are not about restoration we are raising the profile of this beautiful and environmentally sensitive area. The damage caused by the flood in 1912 and the subsequent lowering of bridges and removal of locks mean that actual boat navigation is unlikely to ever be restored".
