National Grid Helps Boost Visitor Attractions At Popular Canal Festival

National Grid helped deliver a day to remember at an annual canal festival which drew crowds estimated at 3,000

The Angel Canal Festival was recently held at the City Road Basin on Regent’s Canal in Islington, North London.

The festival has been running since 1985 and involves the local community, canal user groups such as British Waterways, the St Pancras Cruising Club, the Inland Waterways Association as well as the London Borough of Islington.

Featuring attractions including music, performances, sport and children’s activities, the event promotes the canal as an historic, local, environmental and leisure resource.

National Grid sponsored canoe sessions, boat rides and The Beauchamp, a floating classroom at the event. The latter provided lessons for children on how to use recycled materials to make works of art.

The floating classroom also played host to a range of creepy crawly displays featuring exotic animals including a chameleon, tarantula, giant cockroaches, millipedes and African snails. National Grid staff also attended the event.

Simon Ryder, Chief Executive of the Beauchamp, said: “National Grid's sponsorship of the boat's Creepy Crawlies and Recycled Art workshops gave us the chance to showcase our important work. After seeing our collection of millipedes, cockroaches, spiders and, star of the show, Geoff the Chameleon, we think we achieved our aim of leaving children and parents amazed by nature."

Beryl Windsor, Angel Canal Festival organiser said: “We are very grateful to National Grid for its support at this year’s festival – thanks to their involvement we were able to fund extra activities on the floating classroom and at the Islington Boat Club. The creepy crawly displays on the Beauchamp were particularly fantastic, and gave a lot of local children something to remember the day by!”

National Grid is currently carrying out essential work on the cable cooling system between St John’s Wood and West Ham. This involves work at a number of locations along the Regents Canal and around the City Road Basin.

The canal has also been used by National Grid for moving materials and equipment up and down the canal, which avoids congestion on the roads.

This vital project will help ensure Londoners continue to enjoy the safe and reliable power supplies which make life as we know it possible.

National Grid is working very hard to ensure this work is delivered with minimal impact on the local community and canal and towpath users.
